Sunday afternoon with two choral masterworks from the Baroque: JS Bach’s Magnificat and Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria. The Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise, is a joyous and celebratory work with complex textures, virtuoso instrumental parts and emotional variety, featuring a five-part choir.
Vivaldi’s Gloria also praises God’s majesty with its brilliant melodies, lively rhythms, jubilant and thrilling choruses and more intimate arias. It is often described as having Italianate warmth and has a lighter, four-part vocal texture.
